another observation is that legs and calves get almost insignificant portions of fat

That's because most of the fat lying around your lower body tends to be on the posterior side - glutes and hams. Calves are one of the most genetically influenced body-parts of a human body.

I am 50 and want to know why I gain weight in the winter and lose some in the summer. I do not do anything that different. I still run, play golf three times a week and swim, but I do not lift weights or any other type of workout. I am starting to get a gut and love handles. I was wondering if I can institute something simple into my regiment to lose the fat along these areas?

hey eric, if you're gaining weight, it can be only due to two things. either you're eating more, or moving less (probably lessened outdoor activities in the winter).

wrt your question, spot reduction is nearly impossible. the only way to lose fat around your tummy would be to lose fat overall. and sadly for us guys, the lower abdominal area happens to be the place where fat comes off the last. :/

my suggestion here would be to start doing a combination of heavy weight lifting whilst eating at a caloric deficit to lose fat.

If you are looking for something more "simple" besides heavy weight lifting, I would suggest increasing the intensity of your runs... In terms of distance and speed.

Wow big changes there. My bodyfat percentage is at 8% but I'm not nearly as ripped as the guy with 7% bodyfat. Better start working out more!
