As I'm sure many have their own opinions of this workout method, there are many recommendations against this method and many others say its fine. There seem to be a divided opinion about long term joint damage yet this remains a popular and top selling tool for workouts.

I've personally tried ankle weights and it made my knees hurt and start to pop. But others I know have jogged or ran with both ankle and wrist weights for years with absolutely no problems.

What is your take on Ankle weights?

The only time i use ankle weights are for leg raises to work out the abs. It does help in adding additional resistance. Personally i would avoid going running with ankle weights. The weights at the ankle would cause some inertia and momentum issues for your strides. I would rather use a weighted vest or something worn on the body where there would be less "movement" or "swinging".

I will not use ankle weights. Firstly the weights are quite negligible. Secondly, the comfort issue, i think @prosu mentioned the use of weighted vest is a better way to add weight to ur runs or workout. Or u can carry a bag with weights that hugs around your body. Better comfort IMHO.

It depends on the exercise! If it's like running, the weights on the ankle may add excessive pressure on the joints due to the all the swinging of the legs. But if it's like for slow motion stuff like leg raise, I don't see an issue with it.

I am a sprinter and would NEVER use leg/ankle weights for running because you would not want to mess up your run. However I think it is fine for core exercises or maybe biking to add a little resistance. You don't want to use these weights too often though because it could cause long term damage. Same thing with wrist weights.

Personally I think it's a waste of resources, unless you happen to be training for a certain sport or some sort and your coach suggests that you use it.
