A cleaner will be spending two years behind bars after breaking into his former workplace to steal a cash register that contained only S$2.
This is the minimum sentence for his housebreaking offence.
Ansar Anwar broke into a Sakae Sushi outlet at Parco Bugis Junction shopping mall by forcing open a rear door at around 6am on June 28.
Assistant Public Prosecutor Raja Mohan said that he left the premises after taking the cash register.
Ansar, a Malaysian, then broke it open with a screwdriver - only to find that it contained just S$2.
The court heard that he threw away the cash register and used the money to take a bus to Johor Bahru.
But he returned to Singapore four days later and was arrested at the Woodlands Checkpoint.
