If you're like me, you like loud music...but your neighbors probably don't. Steve Guttenberg over at The Audiophiliac shares a few tips for isolating sound on the cheap.

A truly soundproof room can cost thousands of dollars, and while you won't be able to keep all that noise out with the DIY method, you can certainly do a lot to help. One of the best things, Steve says, is using some weather-stripping foam tape on your doors:
I've used weather-stripping foam tape around the top and sides of a doorframe to create a better air seal that will limit the amount of sound that comes through a door. On the bottom of the door I've attached a plastic "door sweep." You'll need to set the sweep to just barely brush the floor as it closes to reduce the size of the gap between the door and saddle. The foam tape and door sweep will reduce the amount of sound that leaks out through the door; the better the seal, the less sound will leak through. Installed with care the sound reduction will be significant from those two tweaks.

Isolating the sound that escapes through your door can do a lot, and you can get a similar rubber pad to keep your subwoofer from rumbling your downstairs neighbors. Of course, with the perfect pair of headphones, you can stay truly silent for your neighbors—but we understand that sometimes you just need to blast it. Hit the link for more DIY sound isolation tips, and share your own in the comments.

sounds good - but then the winodws has got to be covered too, not only doors alone. On a side note, adding some sound aboserbent materials can help too. Like foam cushions, etc.

Nice simple tips that could be useful too to avoid noise from the neighborhood. I am the one who likes being silent while my neighbors would want to blast it out without being considerate to others. Windows should be really sealed or covered by foam or cushion aside from the door.:p
