(CHINA DAILY/ASIA NEWS NETWORK) - A 19-year-old high school student in Yuzhou, Central China's Henan province, has been running 30km a day between home and school to save the 9-yuan (S$1.83) fare, for two years, chinanews.com reported on Friday.

The student, Yan Mingqiang, is from a poor family with four siblings, and his parents are both ill, his mother bed-ridden. To reduce financial pressure on his family, Mr Yan even works during each vacation.

The two years of running has made Mr Yan a good long-distance runner, and his teacher believes he has good prospects in sports. Currently, Mr Yan's biggest wish is his parents' full recovery.

Going to such an extreme extent just to save a dollar or so, it is likely he does not have the simple luxuy of adequate or proper footwear. Covering 30km a day with proper gear is already amazing enough (imagine his monthly mileage!).

What amazes me more is that his biggest wish is not for wealth but for his mother's full recovery. Respect.
