[Help!] The Girl I Like Won’t Respond to My Emails (´･ω･`) is a series of confessional anecdotes posted by an anonymous user on the Japanese message board 2channel in 2011. Over the course of five threads, a self-declared college-age male poster described his infatuation and obsession with a girl he called Denko. After an English translation was posted to Tumblr in April 2012, the story was turned into an alternate reality game on the site.

tl;dr:

In his first post, the original poster (OP) stated that he has had feelings for Denko since high school. At the time of the post, they were both in their second year of college and had just hung out for the first time. After that night, they talked often but then she stopped responding for three days. He was worried and decided to come to 2channel seeking advice. As the story progressed, OP revealed that he sent Denko 600 emails, telling her that he had no idea how to handle “three-dimensional” women. Over the course of the posts, it became evident that OP’s behavior was similar to that of a stalker, with him appearing at her home unannounced and Denko asking him to refrain from contacting her again.

When other posters suggested that he back off, OP threatened them by stating he would never forgive the person for speaking negatively of his love for Denko. However, most of the responses to OP’s questions were troll baiting, encouraging him with bogus advice. Nearly all of OP’s posts were accompanied by the emoticon “(´･ω･`)” to denote his shyness. By the final thread, he had met another girl named A-ko, whom he paid in exchange for a relationship, noting he spent over ¥700,000 Japanese yen (approximately $8727 USD at the time) on her. After posting about A-ko, OP did not return to 2channel and the story was never verified as true.

Once we hit second year, we went out drinking, and I worked up the courage to exchange numbers.
We started out talking often, but she hasn’t answered me in three days now.
I’m getting depressed just thinking that Denko might be sick, or that something happened to her… (´･ω･`)
Please, somebody give me some advice.

I hurried to Denko’s house and rang the doorbell.
Then Denko’s mother came out and said Denko was out of the house.
I introduced myself to her and told her I was going out with Denko, so she said “If you want, you can wait and have some tea until Denko gets back.”
So then I waited for Denko at her house with her mom… (´･ω･`)

I spent about ten hours talking with Denko’s mother about Denko in high school and her personality and such, but she didn’t come home.
Her mother called Denko’s cellphone a bunch of times, but she couldn’t get through.
Late at night, her mother told me “I’ll give you a call when Denko comes home,” and so I went home. Sorry for the long explanation. (´･ω･`)
Apparently Denko’s out having fun with a friend, so I’m relieved to hear she’s okay.
Also, Denko’s mother was just as nice as her, which surprised me.
I guess Denko takes after her mother… (´･ω･`)
So now I’m waiting for a call about Denko coming home.

The OP didn’t post again. The thread died. And unless people just stopped keeping a lookout for threads titled “[Help!] ___ (´･ω･`)”, nothing more was posted. We never know what happened to the perhaps-no-longer-stalked Denko, the apparently-pregnant A-ko, or… the OP.

The first thread was started on April 6th, 2011, and the last post from the OP was on May 2nd, 2011. However, the threads only came to my attention recently, perhaps because it had been nearly a year since people last heard about them.

I think the comment near the end of the second thread says it pretty well. Even if the OP was a troll, it’s scary that he could even make these things up. It’s scary because - as some of us know firsthand - people like him do exist, even if they aren’t all obvious about it online.

Whether or not the OP was real only determines whether or not Denko was a real girl suffering from real stalking. There still can be and still have been countless others whom this really, definitely happens to.

At any rate, this is the way the story ends. Not with a shank, but with a
